CRF- textarea type

CRF- textarea type
I'm trying to display a textarea box on the page using the following setup in the CRF.
The system creates a textarea box larger than the standard input however the data entered does not save at all.
CRF fiield defination is as follows;
RESPONSE_TYPE : textarea
RESPONSE_LABEL: textarea
DATA_TYPE: ST (Character String)
We discovered that the standard RESPONSE_TYPE=text is limited to 255 characters so we need to use the larger input for detailed comments.
Does anyone else know how to correctly define a larger input box for capturing detailed comments?
Thanks,
Nitesh Patel

  • Hello Nitesh,

If I understand your question right, for your case, you want larger size for response_type in your CRF. For this purpose, you need to change length of ‘NAME’ column in table ‘RESPONSE_TYPE’.

Are you using PostgreSQL? If so, you could do:
    Open pgAdmin III
in your openclinica database, find table RESPONSE_TYPE in the table list
right-click on table RESPONSE_TYPE and choose Properties. You will see a new pop-up.
Click Columns tab. You will see all the columns.
Click on NAME. You will see the row being highlighted.
Click Change option at the bottom right conner. You will see another new pop-up which allows you make property change for NAME column.
Find Length property and make change to the value of Length
Click OK. The pop-up will be closed and your change will be saved.
Click OK again to close the first pop-up.

    Hope this help.

    CRF- textarea type
    Hi Nitesh,
Actually the value of RESPONSE_TYPE is system pre-defined, and you can only choose a value from a list (all the values are listed in the column diescription in the item sheet). All the possible values are as following:
    text
    textarea
    single-select
    radio
    multi-select
    checkbox

So I am guessing that you don't want to enlarge the field size of RESPONSE_TYPE. Are you trying to enlarge item_data( the data you enter for a question) or other fields?

    Thanks,
    Jun
