Sharing an item across CRFs

Some of the studies we do need to present the same CRF in multiple languages. Another system we're looking at does this by making item names global, so you can make an English version and a Spanish version, for example, of the CRF that use the same items. This isn't how OpenClinica does things, but most of the machinery to make it work seems to be there. Is there any way to refer to items in other CRFs in a CRF definition? Any other suggestions for how to solve the original problem?
Thanks,
sarr

  • Dear Sarr,
OpenClinica does, in fact, support multiple versions of a CRF, linking back to global item names in the database. There is more information about creating and updating CRF Versions here:

I'd be interested to find out why you get the impression that OpenClinica does not support CRF versioning. Is there something in the user interface that we could change to emphasize this?

I was also thinking about a related issue. We have some items that appear on more than one CRF (whether that's a good practice or not is a different discussion :-)) and sometimes finding ourselves having to do tricks so that if it's changed on one it magically appears in the other. Being able to "share" an item between two CRFs would be a simple solution to that as well.
Am I making any more sense?
    thanks,

  • Hi Sarr,
Regarding your second question, there are two ways to put values in other Items based on what you enter or update:
-- Currently we allow Scoring in CRFs, where you can output a simple formula for an item value based on other values that you enter. For example, you can calculate BMI etc. Sample CRFs with scoring can be found here: https://openclinica.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=developerwiki:roadmap#milestone_4_garnet

-- In OpenClinica 3.1, we will implement new Rules which will allow you to automatically insert data into other Items. This should be featured in an upcoming blog post.
    Hope that helps, Tom

Thanks Tom. I read this as looking toward creating a new version of the
form - new as in changed - with potentially different data; hence the
need for rebuilding rules. What we would like to do is have two
"alternates" (to use a term with fewer implications) that are identical
from the point of view of everyone who's interested in the data, but for
which the descriptions, instructions etc are in different languages.
Internationalization of the CRF, essentially. We could do that
versioning, but if I'm understanding it correctly it seems awkward,
because of things like having to have two rule sets. Unfortunately this
is one of the few things that actually works well in the system our
    group is currently using.
I was also thinking about a related issue. We have some items that
appear on more than one CRF (whether that's a good practice or not is a
different discussion :-)) and sometimes finding ourselves having to do
tricks so that if it's changed on one it magically appears in the other.
Being able to "share" an item between two CRFs would be a simple
    solution to that as well.
Am I making any more sense?
    thanks,
