# Duration of hospital stay

Hi everyone,

I hope someone could help me.

I’ve three items.
First one: Hospital_Admission with data type = DATE
Second one: Hospital_Discharge with data type = DATE
Third one: Duration with data type = Int or String

The third item should contain the duration of hospital stay in days.
Is it possible to do this with an eCRF calculation item or with rules?

I’ve tried it with a rule containing an insert action, but I don’t know, how I could
calculate the two date items.

Thanks for help,
Kind regards
Christian

Hi Christian,

Gerben Rienk wrote up a solution for date calculations in the OpenClinica wiki [1], which looks like it could be adapted to your situation.
